Historical Moments in Houston

With the Astros making another trip to the World Series last month, Houston is again making history! This month, we’re taking a break from sharing Space City’s out-of-this-world food and culture and are instead highlighting some notable and iconic moments in Houston's history!

“Be Someone” Graffiti

A photo of the "Be Someone" graffiti signage in Houston along I-45.

Since its origin in 2012, the piece has been vandalized and drawn over many times - but has always been restored.

This iconic piece of Houstonian art can be found over I-45. It is well known all over Houston because of its easily seen location. Houston traffic can be stressful, and many Houston drivers say that this graffiti makes them take a moment and slow down! It is a common (but admittedly difficult) photo op for tourists and commuters. Since its origin in 2012, the piece has been vandalized and drawn over many times - but has always been restored. The message was constantly changed or altered. In 2021 people believed that the “Be Someone” graffiti was gone for good, but recently, we have seen its reappearance! Although this may look like a simple piece of work to some, it is a staple of Houstonian perseverance!

Astrodome Performance

It was the first significant stadium to install artificial turf (called “Astroturf”), which is what most stadiums in the world have today!

The Houston Astrodome is the world's first doomed multipurpose stadium! The Astrodome is a piece of history in many ways. It was the first significant stadium to install artificial turf (called “Astroturf”), which is what most stadiums in the world have today! Since its official opening in 1965, it has served as the home for many sports events, including Houston's major league baseball games. Many historical events have happened in the Astrodome. Still, our pick for the Houston History Hall of Fame is Tejano signer Selena’s final performance in 1995 - the last concert before her untimely passing.

First Word Spoken on Lunar Surface

A photograph of two astronauts on a rocky surface. One of the two is using a telescope to look at something off in the distance.

As Armstrong lands on the moon, he says, “Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed.”

Although this event didn't occur in Houston, it’s definitely Houston history! In 1969 during the Apollo 11 moon landing, Neil Armstrong’s first word spoken to NASA from the moon's surface was “Houston.” As Armstrong lands on the moon, he says, “Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed.” There is debate today about whether this was his first word as they landed (instead of merely the first word broadcast back to Earth), but in Houston, we believe it was!
